Greetings all Canucks far and wide! In only one short week our home and native land will be celebrating a birthday for Canada Day 2012, do you have your party plans arranged?
Last year for Canada we featured a post about how Canadian travelers and expats celebrate Canada Day abroad. This year for Canada Day 2012 we will give you some tips for honoring our nation’s birthday on your own home soil.
What is Canada Day Anyway?
Canada Day, or Fête du Canada as they call it in Quebec, is a federal holiday which began on July 1st 1867 when all of the British colonies of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and the Province of Canada (Ontario and Quebec) were joined together. This is when Canada became a kingdom in its own right, or essentially “Canada’s Birthday”.
How to Celebrate Canada Day 2012
There are a few essential ingredients for a great Canada Day, whether you are living in Victoria, BC or St. John’s, Newfoundland or anywhere else in between. They are Canadian flags, sunshine, beer, good friends, live music, delicious food and fireworks. Almost every city or town in the country will be hosting some sort of party on Canada 2012 so if you want to join in the fun you can head to the local city center or park and check it out.
If you want to do something a little different on Canada Day 2012, here are some creative ideas of what to do:
Go Camping – One of the best things about Canada is that it has such an abundance of unspoiled wilderness. Drive out to a hidden campsite near a Rocky Mountain lake or in an Ontario forest and spend Canada Day singing songs around the campfire.
Have Your Own Party – If you are tired of the crowds downtown, invite your best friends over and have a barbecue at home. You can decorate your backyard with flags and even make a red and white cake for the occasion!
Take a Trip – Why not enjoy a change of scenery for the weekend and take a trip to somewhere else in Canada? Celebrating Canada Day 2012 in a different destination will really make it fun and memorable.
What are some of the best places in the country to go to on this special day? Vancouver has one of the best celebrations in Canada on Granville Island with a pancake breakfast, live jazz and a parade followed by a huge concert at Canada Place and fireworks in Burrard Inlet. The fireworks in Mel Lastman Square in Toronto are also some of the best in the country. Of course, Canada Day is also celebrated with style in the capital city of Ottawa with a huge range of rides, concerts and events to choose from.
