Have you ever had to lug a huge awkward bag around everywhere you go, causing back injury and pain, or been in an embarrassing situation where you are forced to throw away some of your possessions to avoid a overweight baggage charge? If you have, you will understand how important packing light really is.
Packing a light bag will not only save you time and money, it is also easier to carry around and will make your travels so much more free and enjoyable.
With so many possessions how do you decide which items make the cut? It can be hard deciding whats practical for travel so here are some tips to help you on your way.
Tip 1: Be Ruthless – Get rid of it
I once heard a tip that said gather everything you want to take, then immediately get rid of half of it. If you are still left with too much, repeat the process. It can be fun eliminating your prized possessions and you may even shock yourself with what makes the cut. (Don’t forget underwear or socks though)
Tip 2: Wear It
Big boots or jacket? don’t let it take up half your bag, wear them. On a plane your clothes don’t count as carry on so wear the big jacket and take it off when you get on board.
Tip 3: Roll It
Every good packer knows that you can fit twice as many t-shirts in a bag when rolled. Try take clothes in wash and wear fabrics that don’t crease easily.
Tip 4: Buy it
Believe it or not, New Zealand/Thailand/Brazil has shampoo too! Don’t waste weight and space with things that are cost next to nothing and are available anywhere you will be travelling. If you find yourself short of a T-shirt you can always buy a couple at your destination.
Tip 5: Test It
So you’ve crammed everything in? Now try lifting it. Can you really carry that everywhere you need to? If not look at the items that take up the most weight and cut as necessary. Always check your bag is within your airlines weight restriction, you may find yourself abandoning shoes at the check-in desk.
These are just what I do. I’m a man it may be easier for me than it is for the ladies. How do you pack? Share your tips with us in the comments.

I need this! I am a chronic over-packer. I’m going to give some of these ideas a try on my next trip. I thank you and my husband/pack mule thanks you!
I’m awful about packing light. I always pack to much. My weaknesses are photo equipment and books. I haven’t solved the photo equipment problem yet. But for books, I remind myself that I never even have time to read them! There is too much to learn during travel, and guide books can be easily stored on a digital device.
