Global Goose is Flying to Thailand!

In only a few short days, Lee and I will be setting foot on a brand new travel adventure on a continent where neither of us has ventured before. We will be flying from Washington DC, USA to Bangkok, Thailand to embark on a backpacking trip around Southeast Asia!

Between the cheap cost of living in Thailand, the gorgeous beaches and the multitude of stunning sights, it is an extremely popular location with backpackers. We have both been looking forward to exploring this part of the world for years!

In our signature “trust-your-future-self” style we have very few concrete plans. We have a rough idea of visiting Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and maybe elsewhere in the region, but we will see where the road ends up taking us. Let the journey begin!

What We Are Looking Forward To in Thailand

We are absolutely twitching with excitement for our next big travel adventure and here are some of the aspects of Thailand that we are looking forward to the most:

The Cost of Living in Thailand

We will get a better sense of this when we get our feet on the ground but from the research we have done Southeast Asia sounds like an incredibly cheap place to travel. We have read countless travel blogs praising the cheap cost of living in Thailand. Apparently you can get hostels for $5-$10 per night and plates of food for mere pocket change. After spending a year in Canada and the USA, two very expensive countries to travel in, Lee and I (and our bank balance) are really looking forward to the cheap cost of living in Thailand.

The Food

Although the cost of living in Thailand is cheap, the food is amazing. Our research tells us that we can get absolutely gorgeous fresh and delicious Thai food for cheap prices, so we are prepared to feast like kings on spicy, aromatic and exotic dishes that we have never tried before.

Meeting Other Backpackers

Since we have been traveling quite geographically remote regions of Canada and the USA recently, we have missed out on the company of other budget backpackers like ourselves. Not to say that we will not embrace the local culture, but we also will love meeting other interesting travelers from around the world in our hostels in Thailand.

History and Culture

As the art, architecture and history geek in this traveling couple, I am looking forward to exploring the ancient ruins and historical sites of Southeast Asia. Visiting Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the largest Hindu temple in the world, has been on my bucket list for a long time as well as Hoi An, Vietnam, a city with a very well preserved architectural heritage. (Ok, I can tell that I am boring you all now so that is enough geekiness out of me.)

Weird Wacky Adventures

One of the things that we love most about travel is the unexpected. We are thrilled when we end up in weird, wacky and wonderful situations that we never could have predicted. We hope that exciting and exotic Thailand will bring us new friends, hilarious situations, moments of epiphany and travel experiences that we will never forget.

  1. Good luck in all of your endeavors, Kelly! I enjoyed reading the last post on Thai festivals (including the funny mud story). I hope that you both get some rest and relaxation while there. And thanks for the info about low cost of living in Thailand – did not know that. I am still determined to get to a Thai spa someday. Good luck!

  2. You must enjoy your trip to South East Asia! Thai food is simply delicious. In fact, any South East Asian cuisine is to die for but be prepared for the spicy meals, as we Asians love it!

Can’t wait to read about your adventures in Thailand, Vietnam, and perhaps, other countries of SEA.

  3. I am so jealous of you- this looks amazing! I had no idea Thailand was so cheap- almost all of my travel has been in the USA and Europe, both of which are obviously hugely expensive. A hostel for $5 sounds to die for. The food also looks great!

I hope you enjoy Angkor Wat. It is definitely on my list of places I want to visit some day- I’m counting on you guys to tell me if it is deserving of all the hype :)

  4. I look forward to reading about your adventures as Thailand is on my list of countries to travel to in the next few years. I have my eye on a 40 day relaxed tour where I’ll have ample time to explore each destination before moving on. The groups are also small which means it will be easier to get to know everyone than on a huge tour. I will travel idependently one day but being a newbie to international travel on my own this trip seems like a good starting point. I’ve heard Thailand is one of those countries that changes peoples views on life and what’s important. :-)

  5. I’m looking forward to the blog posts about your adventures in Southeast Asia. Thailand seems like such a fascinating and historically rich country. The architecture is so unique and beautiful. I can’t wait to see the photographs! They are going to spectacular.

Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam will definitely be an adventure. It will be interesting to read of the challenges that you face in your travels. Beyond the cultural differences, there may be societal conflicts as well. Stay safe and have a wonderful journey!

  6. Oh, I went to Thailand, and everything was much more expensive. We stayed in the hotel and we paid 60$ per night. And our exdcursions were very expensive too. But we rode elephant, it is really cool. I neverr thought that elephants can be so clever. And, I want to ask you a question. Maybe the cost depents on which country I came from. Because I am from Russia and I paid more than you. It is really disgusting.
